A cars ignition switch has multipurpose utility. As its name implies, the first and foremost function is to engage the ignition system of the car, or to start the car from a dead state. Secondly, it can provide access to various features or accessories of the car, like the stereo system, the radio, the windshield wiper, the headlights, brake oil levels, gasoline levels, dashboard backlight etc. The ignition switch can also be used to control the bonnet of a car.
While in some cars the electronic switch which actually switches on the rest on the system depending on the feedback from the ignition lock cylinder are integrated into a single unit, in other cars they can be separated from each other. Based on this variation, the term ignition switch can be used without a doubt for both the electronic switch and the ignition lock cylinder. The distinction is quite difficult to adjudge since both types of systems are found in abundance.
Even in the absence of ignition switches, cars did exist! The cars engines then used to be started or ignited by mechanically turning a crank, whose associated shaft used to turn the engine, moving it out of its inertia. In the present times, a flywheel associated with the cars engine is brought into action through an electric relay system activated by the ignition switch, ultimately starting up the engine. The flywheel is a large, flattened disc which has teeth on the outer circumference. A gear associated with the starter system engages the teeth of the flywheel when the ignition switch is turned ON, thus bringing the flywheel into life briefly with a huge momentum transfer, which starts up the engine.
The typical ignition system has four configurations, Off, Accessories, On, and Start. In some cars there are two dead states of the key, Off and Lock; OFF switches off the car, while the Lock configuration lets you remove the key from the ignition cylinders keyhole. In the accessories configuration, certain accessories as mentioned earlier that remain off in the OFF and LOCK configurations in order to prevent the car’s battery from being drained, use up very low power. People are often advised to use the Accessories position often for a longer car battery life.
Since features such as the indicator for fuel and brake oil levels are turned on only when the ignition switch is in the ON state, since they are useful when the car is running. Since the start position is meant only to jump start the car engine, the key is not allowed to remain in the start position for long, and is turned automatically to the ON position by spring action. When the switch changes its configuration from Start to ON, the starter system is cut off from battery power, and the cars engine starts running by a relay through the flywheel.

Automotive Service Warning Lights That Your Vehicle Needs Automotive Repair!
Paying close attention to your vehicle’s warning lights is one of the surest ways to know whether your vehicle needs a minor automotive service, or a more extensive automotive repair. The dashboard lights are color-coordinated according to the severity of the warning (i.e., yellow is caution, red is serious). Each time you start the car, all of the lights and indicators appear as the car’s computer checks each system. When the lights go out, the computer has verified that each of the vehicle’s systems is functioning properly.
If an indicator light remains on several minutes after the car has been started, or if it comes on while driving the car, you should be concerned about it. You will want to treat all dash warning lights like traffic signals.
The two basic kinds of warning lights; Yellow and Red, are further described below:
Yellow Warning Lights –
On most cars, a yellow “Service Engine Soon” light means “proceed with caution.” Your car’s computer system has indicated a potential problem and is alerting the driver.
The computer system is capable of correcting some minor abnormalities, but if the light continues to come on after multiple car starts, it is telling you that you need to consult a technical manual and/or schedule an automotive service. If the light comes on while you are driving but doesn’t come back on again, the computer system probably corrected the problem without any further intervention.
Common problems that may cause the “Service Engine Soon” light to come on are:
* computer-related problems, such as faulty sensors
* anti-lock brake systems
* safety restraint systems, such as air bags
* emissions components
Red Warning Lights –
A Red Warning light indicates an immediate danger to your car and you should immediately pull over and turn off the car. Whatever caused the red light to come on can be a safety issue (i.e., brakes), so proceed with caution as you maneuver to stop the vehicle.
Unfortunately, when the red light comes on, the problem is already occurringthis is NOT a pre-warning. It can be a matter of seconds before permanent engine damage occurs. Call for road-side assistance for automotive repair.
Problems that normally cause red warning lights are:
* low oil pressure
* engine over-heating
* brake failure
* transmission over-heating
* low battery voltage.
Like smart phones, vehicles these days are ‘smart’ and are continuously monitoring the performance of your vehicle.

Automotive Shop Equipment Los Angeles- Multimeters
The multimeter is an Automotive Shop Equipment Los Angeles used to check almost any circuit on the car, but caution must be used when selecting one for purchase. It should be an automotive meter of high impedance and preferably digital. A high-impedance meter is used to protect electronic circuits during testing. It will have two regular leads: a black and a red. Automotive multimeters have additional leads for temperature, engine speed, and other measurements exclusive to the automobile. The controls on most multimeters include selections for the three basic electrical measurements: voltage, current, and resistance. Some meters require the operator to select the range of measurements. The better and more expensive ones have automatic ranging. Ranging is the scale of measurement. For instance, if voltage is being read, the operator may have to select a 0-20-volt scale or a 20-100-volt scale. Automatic ranging meters do this automatically.
Automotive multimeters have selections for revolutions per minute, temperature, frequency, and others depending on the make and model of the meter. Additional leads are required to make the most of these measurements. There are meters that measure only resistance (ohmmeter), voltage (voltmeter), or current (ampere). Meters of this type are not common in the automotive field. There is one meter, however, that is common to almost every tire, parts, and repair facility. It is a volt/ampere tester. The VAT 40 is dated technology because it is an analog type of meter, butmany still exist and work as good as new. An analog meter is similar to the speedometer on a car where a moving needle points to a number for the measurement. Its replacement, the VAT 60 performs the same tests, but the display data is in a digital format. Both are used to test batteries and charging systems. This is one automotive meter that is capable of reading high current. On a starting system, the current may be as high as 400 to 500 amperes.
Most multimeters Automotive Shop Equipment Los Angeles can read no more than 10 amperes. None of the VAT testers will test a dead battery. There is a test with the VAT 40 that allows the battery to be charged for 3 minutes and then tested. This particular test does not mean the battery is good, but it can tell the technician if the battery will accept a charge. A battery should have at least 12 volts before testing to achieve a correct test result with a vat-40 or vat-60.
Multimeter is one of the most popular auto shop equipment which is used to check the circuit of the car.
Dedicated Motorcycle Parking Reduces Cost, Congestion
Traffic is the bane of all commuters, and once you reach your destination you have to park. In most parts of the world, motorcycles and scooters are what many people turn to in order to make the commute faster, easier, and cheaper. The U.S. is not most parts of the world, but were getting better.
When a commuter rides to work on his/her motorcycle, they accomplish several things. They make the highways and streets less congested, because they take up less space. Their lighter vehicles do less damage to the road surface. And when they park, they take up less parking spacesometimes.
Its that parking aspect that some communities have taken to improve by designating certain parking areas specifically for motorcycles. And yet, in other communities, its almost as if they want to discourage people from riding. Thats how different the laws are.
Lets say youre making your commute on your slim, light, Suzuki GSX-R600. If you work in Edmonton, WA, you can park alongside a lot of other bikes in special, no-charge areas. Not only do you save the money you would otherwise pay to park, but with six or more bikes fitting easily into the space one car would use, youre helping other motorists find their parking spaces more easily.
In other cities, however, you would face an entirely different proposition parking your bike. Some cities require all vehicles to park parallel to the curb in areas designated for parallel parking. That might leave you with room for only two bikes is that space, and thats if the city allows more than one vehicle per parking space. Some do not, even when youre talking motorcycles.
The absurdity of that mandate was demonstrated a couple years ago when one city police department started coming down hard on bikes they considered improperly parked. The bikers banded together and appealed to the city to change their rules but no relief was provided. So a plan was hatched. Early one morning, before most commuters were arriving at work, several hundred motorcyclists came in very early and parked one bike to a parking space all over the downtown area. As far as you could see there were acres of unused space between these solitary motorcycles but nowhere at all for people in cars to park. The city quickly changed its ordinances.
While some four-wheeled motorists might complain that it is unfair for motorcyclists to get preferential parking, the fact is, designated motorcycle parking can be created using curb space that is currently going unused. In Denver the citys traffic department was hard at work on a designated motorcycle parking plan when the recession hit. Although it would have cost very little, with budgets in deficit, any non-essential costs were eliminated and the project stalled before it got off the ground.
Nevertheless, the department was working on an eminently sensible plan. City blocks are frequently marked with paint to designate parking spaces, but often there is not enough room near the corners for another space, even though safety research might show that parking would be OK closer to the corner. Voila. Put a little paint on the asphalt and designate this space for motorcycles. Its just that simple. Now commuters who own motorcycles are encouraged to ride rather than drive because they have convenient, free parking, and that helps everyone else in cars. Its a win-win. Plus, motorists who see motorcyclists getting such a nice benefit might decide its time for them to buy that bike theyve wanted for so long and start riding to work, too.
